Where are automotive adhesives used?

Adhesives are widely used in automobile production. Automotive adhesives are a kind of connecting material, which are used between the same or different materials to connect, fix, reduce vibration, absorb energy or seal.

In automobile manufacturing, the use of good bonding technology can improve driving comfort, reduce noise, reduce shock, lighten, reduce energy consumption, simplify processes, and improve product quality. Therefore, adhesives play an irreplaceable role in vehicle design and manufacturing.

Automotive adhesives can be divided into adhesives for automobile bodies, adhesives for automobile running systems, adhesives for automobile power systems, and adhesives for automobile repairs.

Among them, automotive body adhesives are mainly used for bonding and sealing of the bonding parts of the automobile body structure, including the body, roof, doors and seats, etc., and can be divided into adhesives for automobile bodies, adhesives for automobile interiors, adhesives for automobile ceiling lamps, sealing adhesives for automobile body structures, and electric welding sealants.

New energy vehicles use more adhesives than traditional vehicles. According to the "Current Status and Development Trends of China's Adhesives and Adhesive Tapes Industry" released by the China Adhesives and Adhesive Tapes Industry Association, the amount of adhesive used in the assembly of power batteries for new energy vehicles (PACK sealing, structural thermal conductivity, structural bonding, BMS protection, battery cell bonding, battery potting, thread locking, shell bonding, etc.) will reach about 5 kg, with a sales volume of about RMB 500-1,000 per vehicle. At the same time, automotive electronics adhesives will also be the focus of attention. The rapid growth in demand for new energy vehicles will bring new development opportunities to the adhesive industry.

Four major functions of adhesives on power batteries:

(1) Provide protection for power batteries;

(2) Achieve safe and reliable lightweight design;

(3) Thermal management;

(4) Help batteries cope with more complex usage environments.

There are two main requirements for the application of these adhesives: the first type is structural adhesive, which is mainly used for structural bonding and takes into account a certain degree of thermal conductivity;

The second type is thermal conductive adhesive, which is mainly used for thermal conductive bonding. The purpose of adhesive application is to export the heat generated by the battery cell when it is working to the external heat dissipation components, realize some functions of thermal management, and take into account the requirements of structural bonding.

Among them, structural adhesive refers to adhesives that are used in bonding occasions of load-bearing structural parts, can withstand large dynamic loads, static loads and can be used for a long time.

It is used to replace bolts, rivets or welding to join structural parts of metals, plastics, glass, wood, etc., and is an adhesive that can withstand large loads for a long time and still has reliable performance.

Thermal conductive adhesive is mainly used to complete heat conduction between battery cells and between battery cells and liquid cooling tubes. The specific use of adhesives includes gaskets, potting, filling, etc.
